The boys cross country team took the team title as well as the top two medals at the Hi-Plains League meet at Southwestern Heights Thursday.

The team scored 20 points to out-run Stanton County (35) to take their first team title in that event since 1992.

Pacing the Broncs were the team’s top two runners.

Austin Ritsema placed first in 17:45.55, while Alex Luce was second right behind him in 17:45.86.

Zael Bermudez placed fourth (19:09.47), Gabe Cox fifth (19:21.64) and Justin Leader eighth (19:37.43) to round out the top Lakin scorers.

Blake Matthews (12th) and Vicente Davis (14th) also ran for the Broncs varsity.

For the varsity girls, Emma Miller placed sixth to lead the Broncs. She ran 23:38.27.

Ivy Davis finished eighth (24:16.91), Luna Vazquez 13th (27:23.90) and Melany Lorenzo 14th (27:30.03) to account for Lakin’s team points.

Odaliz Garcia (16th), Abby Holmes (18th) and Kayleen Tanner (19th) were Lakin’s other runners.

The girls placed third with 50 points. Heights won the title with 24, and Stanton County was third with 48.

Lakin placed five runners in the top 10 of the JV boys race.

Camden Bergkamp (2nd), Eric Munson (4th), Brennen Bless (7th), Zalvador Bermudez (8th) and Chris Ortiz (10th) scored for the Broncs.

Stanton County won the JV boys title with 25 points ahead of Lakin’s 30.

Shillelagh Kentner and Addison Grusing placed second and third for the JV girls.

Kate Miller won the middle school girls 3200 meter race, running 13:31.16. 

Claire Barnhardt finished sixth and Michelle Lorenzo finished 18th.

For the middle school boys, Tyler Johnson finished 16th and Gavin Dyas 18th.

The high school regional race is Saturday, Oct. 21 in Great Bend.
