Girls fall in opener

The basketball season kicked off Friday night at home, but it wasn’t the result the girls wanted.
Wallace County held off a late rally to defeat the Broncs 45-39.
The Broncs were down 13-11 after the opening quarter and 27-21 at halftime but cut that lead to two at the end of the third.
Lakin took the lead once in the fourth quarter (36-35) after Lileah Villa scored on a 3-pointer and a field goal.
After the Wildcats took the lead again, Jara Davidson drained her second 3-pointer ofo the night to tie the game 39-39. But the Wildcats prevailed with a 10-3 run to finish the game.
Lakin hit 28 percent of their shots (8 of 30 inside the arc and 4 of 13 outside), while Wallace County shot 35 percent overall.
The Bronc were 11 of 19 from the free throw line and the Wildcats were just 11 of 26.
Wallace County’s advantage came off Lakin miscues. The Broncs turned the ball over 29 times which the Wildcats converted into 23 points.
Though the Wildcats committed 20 turnovers, Lakin wasn’t able to convert any into transition points.
Lakin won the rebounds, 32-29.
Eight Broncs got in the scoring action, led by Villa with 11.
Davidson had eight points and Samantha Vogel six.
Vogel pulled down nine boards to lead the Broncs. Freshman Aryn Michaelis added six rebounds.
Villa had three assists and Reagan Chavira had three steals.
The Broncs (0-1) will be in action Thursday through Saturday at the Goodland Topside Tipoff Tournament.
