Girls finish second at HPL

It was a battle of last year’s tournament finalists but with a different result.
The Lakin girls fell to undefeated Wichita County 67-53 Saturday night in the Hi-Plains League tournament.
It was a matchup of last year's final when the Broncs took down the Indians 47-45.
Wichita County jumped out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter, but over the final three periods they outscored the Broncs by only two points, 49-47.
Lakin shot 41 percent from the floor to the Indians’ 44 percent. Wichita County made four more 3-pointers.
The Broncs had a 30-29 edge on the boards but committed nine more turnovers (24-15).
Jara Davidson led the Broncs with 14 points. Amari Esquibel had nine and Samantha Vogel eight.
Vogel had eight rebounds, Reagan Chavira had three steals, and Esquivel and Kenzie Lohman-Fuller each had two assists to lead the Broncs.
Thursday semifinals
Lakin 51, Stanton County 31
In Thursday’s semifinal at Garden City Community College, the girls pulled away in the second quarter for a 50-31 over Stanton County.
Leading 9-6 after the opening period, the Broncs outscored the Trojans 12-5 in the second to lead by 10 at halftime.
The Broncs shot 43 percent from the floor, including 19 of 37 inside the arc.
Stanton County’s 25 turnovers led to 23 of Lakin’s points.
Lakin won the rebound battle 30-23.
Jara Davidson scored 15 points and Samantha Vogel added 11.
Lileah Villa had four steals and Reagan Chavira had four assists.
Wednesday
Lakin 53, Deerfield 16
The girls kicked off the tournament Wednesday with a 53-16 win over Deerfield played in Elkhart.
The Broncs led 21-4 after one quarter and 42-6 at halftime.
Lakin converted 39.7 percent of their shots, including three 3-pointers.
Deerfield hit for 36 percent from the floor.
Deerfield committed 33 turnovers, leading to 32 of Lakin’s points. Lakin turned the ball over just 10 times.
Lakin held a 23-18 edge on rebounds.
Leading scorers for Lakin were Samantha Vogel with 11 points and Reagan Chavira with 10.
Lileah Villa had six steals and Kinzie Lohman-Fuller five. Chavira had five assists and Villa four.
Vogel led the team with five rebounds.
