Girls fall in opener

The varsity girls dropped their season opener Friday at Wallace County, 49-38.

After taking a 5-0 lead, Lakin saw Wallace County storm back for a 26-14 halftime lead. They increased their lead to 39-24 after three quarters, with the Broncs taking the final period 14-10.

The girls hit just 25 percent from the floor (nine of 32 regular field goals and three of 16 3-pointers) in the loss, but they were 11 of 18 from the free throw line.

Wallace County shot 37 percent from the floor, including 15 of 43 from 2-point range) and were 13 of 31 from the line as Lakin was called for 28 fouls.

The Broncs were out rebounded 42-29. Lakin scored 22 points off 28 turnovers, while Wallace County had 19 points from 30 Lakin turnovers.

Lileah Villa led the Broncs with 14 points, including two 3-pointers. Aryn Michaelis had six points and four rebounds. Villa added six steals.

Amari Esquibel and Jordan McCombs both had three assists.

The girls will be at the Goodland tournament this weekend, opening against Colby on Thursday.
