Girls finish sixth in Goodland

The Lakin girls went 1-2 at the Goodland Topside tournament, finishing sixth.

Saturday

McCook, Neb. 51, Lakiin 23

It was hard to overcome a slow start in Saturday’s fifth-place game, losing 51-23 to McCook, Neb.

McCook scored the first 12 points of the game and took a commanding 22-4 lead after one quarter. They shutout the Broncs in the second to lead 27-4 at halftime.

Lakin shot 25 percent from the floor (9 of 36) while McCook was19 of 50 for 38 percent.

Lakin’s 25 turnovers resulted in 25 of McCook’s points.

McCook won the rebounding game 34-25.

Aryn Michaelis led the Broncs with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Amari Esquibel had four assists.

Friday

Lakin 64, Ulysses 33

After a slow start, Lakin stormed back to take a 64-33 win against the Tigers in Friday’s consolation semifinals.

Trailing 7-6 after one period, the Broncs took an 18-17 lead in the second and never looked back. Lakin scored 21, 20 and 17 points over the final three periods to cruise to the win.

The girls made 40 percent of their shots (22 of 55) while the Tigers shot just 26 percent from the floor.

Lakin was 19 of 26 from the free throw line while Ulysses was just 7 of 21.

Ulysses committed 37 turnovers, leading to 28 of Lakin’s points.

Lakin out-rebounded the Tigers 39-25.

Aryn Michaelis had 17 points and Lileah Villa 13 to lead the Broncs.

Michaelis had 12 rebounds, Villa had eight assists and Jordan McCombs had 11 steals.

Thursday

Colby 58, Lakin 19

Thursday’s opening game proved challenging for the Broncs as they fell to Colby 58-19.

Colby led 16-7 after one period and 29-12 by halftime. The Eagles outscored Lakin 29-7 in the second half.

Lakin shot 25 percent from the floor (5 of 22 inside the arc and 3 of 11 outside), while Colby shot 37 percent overall.

Colby outscored Lakin 28-0 off turnovers, and they out-rebounded the Broncs 37-19.

Amari Esquibel led the Broncs with eight points. Ayrn Michaelis had four rebounds and Lileah Villa had three steals.
