Katie Heier - Teacher Spotlight
Job Title: 1st grade Teacher
A Little bit about Mrs. Heier: I was born in KC, but have lived in Colorado Springs, Chicago, and Warrensburg, MO. I started college at Oklahoma State University then transferred to Kansas State University and that’s where I graduated. I had two amazing opportunities to teach in Sweden and in Mexico when I was in college. I have a master’s degree from Baker University. My teaching career began in the Shawnee Mission school district which is located outside KC. I taught 3rd and 4th grade and was there for 13 years. One day, my husband, Zac, came home and said, “BNSF is relocating me to SWKS.” Poof! Here we are! We have two wonderful boys, Teller(5th grade) and River (preK).
Years In Education and at Lakin: 18 years in education and my 5th year at Lakin.
What do you like about teaching: I have dreamed about being a teacher since I was in 5th grade. I had a teacher that was very boring. I remember daydreaming ways she could make her lessons more exciting. Dreams really do come true! I love that my job allows me to serve, care for, and inspire children from all walks of life.
Favorite Teaching Memories: I love building a little family each year while we grow and learn together. It makes my heart happy when I’ve taught my kiddos something and they take the initiative to use it in their own learning or social situation.
Words of Wisdom to your Students: Try to live your life in a way that makes this world a better place because you were in it!
