Boys take down Holcomb

In a battle of two state-ranked teams, the Lakin Boys held off Holcomb 48-44 on the Longhorns’ home court.
Holcomb (ranked sixth in the state Class 3A poll) took a 21-17 lead at the end of a high-scoring first quarter, but Lakin (ranked seventh) outscored Holcomb 6-3 in a low-scoring second to trail 24-23 at the break.
The Broncs trailed 30-25 at one point in the third period before going on a 10-1 run to take the lead for good.
Lakin shot 37 percent from the floor to Holcomb’s 28. The Broncs outscored Holcomb 15-6 off turnovers.
The Broncs won the rebound battle 33-29.
Nico Doume led the Broncs with 23 points. Adrik Gomez-Esquibel had eight points and Austin Ritsema and Colter Oldham both had seven.
Doume and Ritsema led the team with nine rebounds each.
Doume had three steals and Gomez-Esquibel had four assists.
Lakin (7-1) will play in the league tournament Jan. 20-25, hosted by Syracuse.
