Girls finish third in HPL tournament

The Lakin girls bounced back from a semifinal loss on Thursday to take the third-place title Saturday with a 51-47 win over Stanton County.
Trailing 14-10 after one period, the Broncs took a 23-15 late in the second period and 30-24 late in the third.
Stanton County managed to get within three to four points of Lakin’s lead throughout the fourth quarter but the Broncs had answers.
Statistically, Stanton County out rebounded the Broncs 41-31, and they outscored Lakin 19-9 on transition points and 14-12 on second-chance points.
However, Lakin out shot the Trojans 36 percent to 34 percent from the floor. The difference was at the line where the Broncs were a perfect 11-for-11 while Stanton County was 8-for-15.
Lileah Villa led the Broncs with 13 points and Jordan McCombs added 12.
McCombs had seven rebounds and five assists. Amari Esquibel had six boards, and she and Villa had three steals each.
Thursday semifinal
Southwestern Heights 49, Lakin 39
Southwestern Heights broke open a tight game with an 18-8 second quarter to take down the Broncs 49-39 in Thursday’s semifinal.
Lakin trailed just 11-10 after one period and won the second half 21-20, but a 2-for-9 second period proved to be their downfall.
The Broncs shot 33 percent from the floor, while the Mustangs were 35 percent. The Mustangs were 13 of 22 from the free throw line, while Lakin was 7 of 10.
The Mustangs out rebounded Lakin 37-24, outscored them 15-5 off turnovers and were tied 22-22 on points in the paint.
Villa led the Broncs with 12 points. McCombs had 11 and Aryn Michaelis 10.
Michaelis led the team with 11 rebounds. Villa had five assists and Taybree Lohman-Fuller had two steals.
Tuesday Round 1
Lakin 62, Elkhart 30
In Tuesday’s opening round in Syracuse, Lakin took down Elkhart 62-30.
Lakin led 16-7 after one quarter and 30-22 at halftime. They pulled away from the Wildcats with a 22-5 third period.
The Broncs hit 45 percent from the floor while Elkhart was just 24 percent.
They outscored Elkhart 14-0 on transition points and 37-5 off turnovers. Elkhart committed 31 turnovers to Lakin’s 13.
Michaelis led all scorers with 27 points, and McCombs added 14.
Michaelis led the team with 10 rebounds.
Villa and McCombs both had six assists, and McCombs had six steals.
