Girls lose close game at Heights

The Lakin girls traveled to Southwestern Heights Tuesday for a league game.

In a tight contest, the Broncs fell to the 9th-ranked team in Kansas, 38-35.

Heights (14-2) led 11-8 after one quarter and 15-11 at halftime. The Broncs (7-6) outscored the Mustangs 24-23, coming within a point of tying the game twice in the final period.

The Broncs out-shot the Mustangs 37 percent to 30, hitting two more 2-point shots. The difference was outside the arc, where Heights converted two 3-pointers and Lakin none.

Lakin out rebounded the Mustangs 33-27 and outscored Heights 7-0 on second-chance points.

Lakin committed 23 turnovers to Heights’ 12, but the Broncs outscored them 10-9 off turnovers to keep the game close.

Lileah Villa led the Broncs with 17 points and three steals.

Aryn Michaelis had seven points and eight rebounds.

Heights leads the Class 3A regional while Lakin is in eighth place among the 16 teams.
