Girls drop sub-state game
The girls basketball season ended last Tuesday when they fell to host Cimarron 55-47 in the first round of the Class 3A sub-state tournament.
The Broncs led 16-14 after the opening period, but a pair of 7-point quarters saw them trail 43-30 after three quarters.
Lakin mounted a comeback in the final period, outscoring the Bluejays 17-12 but it wasn’t enough.
The Broncs shot 36 percent from the floor, including 7 of 22 from behind the arc. Cimarron shot 42 percent (18 of 40 from inside the 3-point line).
The big differences came on transition points (Cimarron won that battle 15-2) and points off turnovers (16-5).
Cimarron also out-rebounded the Broncs 36-23.
Both teams committed 21 turnovers.
Jaya Esquibel led the Lakin offense with 17 points, including four 3-pointers. Talyn Beltran and Taegan Bachman both added 10.
Esquibel had three steals, while Bachman and Beltran both had four rebounds.
Lakin finished the season 10-13, including three losses to the Jays.
