Vazquez qualifies for state wrestling

Luna Vazquez punched her return ticket to state by placing fifth at 110 pounds at the Class 3-2-1A west regional wrestling tournament in Russell.
The senior won her fifth-place match by fall (4:13) over Dailey Rose of St. Francis.
In her first round, Vazquez received a by, and then she won by fall (1:04) over Kiya Shultz.
In her quarterfinal match, Vazquez won by a 15-5 major decision over Kyra Sowers of Oberlin-Decatur Community.
In her semifinal match, Vazquez found herself on the short end of a 7-2 decision against Kennedy Grizzle of Lyons.
In her consolation semifinal, she lost a 7-4 decision against Saj Snyder of Stockton.
Vazquez will take a 33-12 record into the state tournament.
Miley Roth went 3-2 at 130 pounds. She won her opening match by fall (2:48), but then lost her next match by fall (:43).
In consolation rounds, Roth won two matches by fall (2:50 and 2:29) before losing her last match by fall (1:35).
Roth finished her season 14-13.
Jersey Gonzalez competed at 120 pounds, losing both matches by falls.
The girls state tournament is Feb. 28 and March 1 at Fort Hays State University.
