Baseball gets pair of wins over Ulysses

The baseball team improved to 7-1 Thursday with a doubleheader win at home over Ulysses, 11-8 and 11-4.

In game one, the Broncs took a 4-0 lead into the fifth before the Tigers scored a run. Latin answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Ulysses scored three runs in the sixth, but Lakin responded with five in the bottom of that inning. Ulysses scored four times in the top of the seventh, falling just short of a comeback. Only three of their runs were earned.

Ulysses pounded out 17 hits to Lakin’s 10, but Lakin benefitted from 13 walks. Gabe Cox had two hits for the Broncs and Weston Loeppke had two runs batted in.

Dru Patterson, Armando Salcido and Jayden Johnson each scored two runs.

Salcido and Adrik Gomez-Esquibel both had four stolen bases of the team’s 17 total.

Eli Bemis got the win, pitching four innings, striking out seven and walking just two.

In game two, Lakin scored three runs in the first and fifth innings and five in the third to get the 11-4 win, out-hitting the Tigers 13-9.

Johnson went 4-for-4 at the plate, including a double. He also batted in four runs.

Salcido got the pitching win, going 5.2 innings, striking out six and walking three.
