Part way into the third period Friday night, Mother Nature arrived at the football stadium.
By then, the Broncs held a 36-0 lead over visiting Stanton County.
Thunderstorms rumbling through the area forced a quicker end than expected to the season opener for the football team, but what they played was pretty impressive.
The Broncs struck early when sophomore Armando Salcido took the ball on the first play from scrimmage and ran virtually untouched for a 54-yard touchdown.
Colter Oldham scored twice in the first quarter on runs of 29 and two yards to give the Broncs a 21-0 lead before they changed sides of the field.
Oldham added a third touchdown late in the half when he intercepted a short pass and returned it 15 yards untouched to put Lakin ahead 28-0 at intermission.
A weather system blew in from the north during halftime, but the Broncs capitalized on one more scoring drive when Ross Rider scored on a 23-yard run five minutes into the third period.
After waiting out a weather delay, the game was called just after 9 p.m., with the Broncs starting the season with a win.
Lakin ran 32 offensive plays, picking up 246 yards yards (220 on the ground) and nine first downs.
By contrast, the Trojans ran 29 plays for just 11 yards and one first down.
Both teams were penalized six times, costing Lakin 49 yards and Stanton County 43.
Salcido led the Broncs with 77 yards on just four carries.
Oldham had 10 carries for 86 yards. Rider had two carries for 40 yards.
After missing most of last season with a leg injury, quarterback Maddux Beltran had nine carries for 17 yards and was 2-for-2 passing (both to Oldham) for 26 yards.
Oldham led the team with four tackles and four assists.
Daryan Edgington had two tackles and a sack.
Eli Bemis recovered a fumble.
The Broncs (1-0) are at Syracuse Friday before returning home Sept. 16, when they host Goodland on First Responder Night/Military Appreciation Night.
